ipconfig: an internal error occurred: the request is not supported
is the error that I got when I typed: ipconfig /all into command line in windows xp on one of our clients computers.
Unfortunately I don’t have a screenshot of it. I also couldn’t find it anywhere, but I did find a solution on how to fix it.
First let me describe what happened, then we will get to the solution.
I got to the job site, because of no internet access complaint by the person on the other side of the line. The person said they have tried everything to fix it, but nothing worked. both internet adapters on his computers were connected to internet however had no internet access.
So first thing I did was bring up command line by typing cmd.exe into run window. then I typed ipconfig /all to see all of the available internet adapters and their connectivity. When I hit enter I got the error message that was unseen to me before.

so I looked online for solution and it recommended to reinstall or do a windows repair. this is what I ended up doing. It fixed the problem, however thats not the end of it.
couple of days later I have received a call from another person who had the same thing happen to him. after spending several minutes on the phone with him I realized something. why this problem occurred in first place. it was because of some Rootkit virus that infected the system.
the computer I repaired has also been infected with some rootkit virus, which I removed. I suspect it has messed up the network adapters also. Which in turn makes it difficult to clean. you can’t connect computer to internet so you can’t download or update spyware removal tools. it gets a little tricky, but nothing overnight pc repair couldn’t handle!
