So customer shyly confessed they tried to clean the keyboard by trying to wipe it with the wet rag and apparently wet rag was a little to wet so some water got into the keyboard and caused some keys not to function anymore. so they brought it in for replacement. and we did it in couple of days, because keyboards go by laptop model and are not readily available in los angeles. We usually ship them. After installing new keyboard this Toshiba satellite L355 was working flawlessly and customer was happy.

Best advice on how to clean dirty keyboard is to use the compressed air can and blow it out nicely. you can also flip the laptop upside down and try to shake little objects(like cookie crumbs) out of the keyboard manually. if you flip it upside down though, you must be careful not to bang the screen on anything. so be cautious.

and in some cases we had a client once who used to wash her keyboard in a dishwasher. that is also possible, but after washing it, it must be dried out before using it. so this method is possible but we don’t recommend it. its only for people who are really afraid of germs.

White screen on macbooks means couple of things. Initially his motherboard failed on him, then he had it replaced under warranty. And now all he wanted to do was to install a USB 3.0 card into his desktop so he can take advantage of some serious transfer speed USB 3.0 has to offer. And they are truly not too shabby – around 100MB/s transfer rate. its pretty awesome. it transfers a 3GB file in about one minute – nice!

So the guy bought a Usb 3.0 card and tried to install it himself. it didn’t work. So he called costco customer support and spend 2 hours on the phone with some other guy, who was very nice, but in the end nothing was working.

then the guy thought maybe the usb 3.0 card is bad. so he went to Frys and purchased a new one and to prevent further trouble he asked customer support at frys electronics to install it for him. They went ahead and attempted. The guy who installed it, said he needed to modify the bios settings and after doing it something happened to the bios on start up – it would produce some strange beeps. Anyway, the card was still not installed.

So the guy calls costco computer support again and restores bios settings to default. but beeps still continue and usb 3.0 card still didn’t work. I personally get frustrated just writing about it. If I was in the guys shoes, I’d be definitely taking them off and throwing them at someone

Long story short, he decides to call overnight pc repair – very smart decision! So, now here is the kicker, she lives in Santa Cruz, CA. And we are in Los Angeles. Its a good 350 mile distance between the two. But she still shipped us the laptop to get the water damage repaired.

This repair was not so easy. macbook pro was repaired 2 times. First time we fixed it and it was working for a little while but next day it stopped working again. The second repair took couple more days and finally it fired up and was running nicely. We also find out there was problem with a hard drive, so we replaced it with customers consent and loaded brand new Mac OS Lion on it. After that pc was running smoothly, fully functional. We sent it back to santa cruz and customer is using it happily.

When the owner of this UL30V laptop called us he said his computer was freezing and now it wouldn’t start at all. he wasn’t a rookie himself and the way he explained what was going on made it obvious. So after talking for 15 minutes on the phone we had many clues and suggested it was a hard drive issue, but it had to be tested to be sure 100%.

After he brought the ul30v laptop, we had another little issue, which made things more difficult. the laptop did not have a dvd drive. And when we connected one externally, computer wouldn’t boot from it and would stop recognizing dvd drive. Until finally we had it working, booted computer from the disk and tested hard disk for possible bad sectors.

Surprisingly all the test came back positive. no bad sectors were detected, no faults in drive were present. Yet it still wouldn’t boot the windows. so we ran check disk on it and fixed all possible file system errors, we also fixed the boot record and still no luck. at this point it was very very confusing and nothing made any sense. until something interesting happened.

as we connected the drive to another computer using an USB-IDE connector, we accidentally bumped the hard drive against the desk which was slight, but it did something to it. it made hard drive produce a very unusual noise. it was whirring and clicking slightly. very unusual. either way, after few more intentional bumps against the knuckles this seagate hard drive would start doing those sounds and if connected it would start freezing the system. So our answer was found!

we immediately replaced the seagate hard drive with a 500GB western digital, reinstalled operating system, transferred personal files from broken drive and customer was set happily on his way home with a big smile on his face!!!

so this repair was quite simple on first hand and had to be completed overnight in the perfect world. However we don’t live in one, so upon taking it apart, we realized that this powerbook G4 was still using the old IDE type of connection. And if you were to look for one with any major retailers who sell hard drives, like best buy, frys electronics, staples, etc, you will find out they don’t carry these anymore, because everyone has shifted to a SATA interface hard drives nowadays. So we had to order one online and it took few days to get it.

Another word of caution if you try to change a hard drive on a powerbook g4 yourself. Be prepared to find your original powerbook g4 operating system disks mac os 10.4 (tiger). because it is very sensitive to disks that were burned and will not take all of them. Once you have the disk you insert it into a dvd drive, restart the computer and after you hear the chime you hold down the “c” key on the keyboard and that will order powerbook g4 to boot from the disc. then just follow directions and your operating system will be installed almost automatically.

But then the thought crossed our minds saying why would it be? it is well protected with Eset Smart Security 5!

From other clients we have heard  ESET Smart Security 5 supposedly was a pretty light program which was fast and effective protecting your computer from various infections. and since overnight pc repair were big proponents of Kaspersky Internet security, we did not pay too much attention to Eset smart security 5 until this case, when it was right in front of us.

if you are familiar with windows operating system, you may know that windows xp used to get blue screen of death (bsod) quite a bit. it used to be mainly because of driver issues and there is not much you could have done about it. With windows 7 you don’t get that very often. It tells me, microsoft has done quite some work to improve things and I congratulate them immensely! I think windows 7 is a brilliant operating system and I hope windows 8 will be even better!!!

that being said, this sony vgn-sr290 laptop was getting a blue screen on normal windows 7 start up and soon after that it would restart automatically. this is not the first time we see this. and there is a reason for it, but it is far from being drivers related.

the reason for the blue screen of death on this sony vaio vgn-sr290 laptop was rootkit infection. Rootkits are very dangerous virus. They are usually undetected by antivirus or even anti-malware softwares and hard to remove. this laptop was infected with rootkit.pihar.b virus and it actually prevents computer from booting up normally. so if you get a blue screen on windows 7 it is very likely that you have a rootkit virus in your system and you need to call overnight pc repair immediately!

we clean viruses like this , I wish I could say with no effort, but that wouldn’t be true. when computer has rootkit, there is very big chance it has many other infections. and this computer did also. At the end we cleaned it and it now runs perfectly!

and one advice for the future to all of you is: stop using internet explorer, use mozilla or chrome as your browsers and install free version of microsoft security essentials it is cost free and does the job just as good or better than the norton, eset, kaspersky that you will pay monthly fee for trust me.
