ltn160at01 lcd screen replacement The mysterious LTN160AT01 Screen has emerged once again in one of the toshiba a505 laptops. Customer brought it in, because screen was cracked.

and usually when you look for the screen based on model of laptop that you have, one should be really careful, especially when the screen is 16 inches and it comes in toshibas or HP laptops.

it may easily be LTN160at01 or LTN160at02 screens which as I have mentioned before are discontinued by the manufacturer (samsung). They don’t make them anymore and probably won’t because everyone is out of them and everyone is using other screens to replace it.

call us if you can’t find a screen to replace ltn160at01 and we will get you one. At overnightpcrepair.com no job is big or small. we get your pc working as quick as possible!!! call now 877-938-8777 to speak to our computer repair technician!

vgn-nw150j sony vaio hard drive This Sony Vaio Vgn nw150j laptop with 4GB of RAM, intel i3 processor, 320GB hard drive, windows 7 64-bit operating system is definitely not a bad toy to have around the house.

until something weird started happening. The customer was in complete confusion, because as he claims laptop was starting to act strange, becoming slow at some points and it wouldn’t let him restore the operating system.

it looked completely bizarre to the untrained eye. but not the the professionals like us.

After running some tests, we couldn’t still diagnose the problem 100% because the software was showing all components were running perfectly. But if you can trick the software, it doesn’t mean you can trick the human mind. After starting to rewrite operating system on this sony vaio vgn-nw150j laptop, our technician has noticed right away, that it takes slightly longer to go through first couple of screens of the menu. Which was totally intuitive and he couldn’t explain it, but he just somehow knew it.

That forced us to run some more intensive tests and we quickly determined that the hard drive in this laptop was not functioning properly. it had too many bad sectors and was not writing properly.

So the customer just ran to fry’s electronics, which is literally 5 minutes away from us, picked up a new hard drive and was out on his way with a smoothly running machine in hand! congratulations! he also left us a great review on yelp.com his name is Jacy check it out by clicking this link. Thanks Jacy for the kind words and your business!

solid state hard drive upgrade This gateway machine was already pretty powerful. besides a few kinks in the windows, it was running pretty smoothly. considering the Intel Core Quad processor at 3.4GHz as well as 6GB of DDR3 RAM, 640GB (WD)of hard drive space in slot 1 and 1TB (seagate) of space in slot 2. honestly a pretty nice piece of equipment.

The client however seduced by my story of upgrading to a solid state hard drive, decided to also go for it in the end. Thinking it was gonna work even faster. and let me tell you it did!

if you don’t know what solid state hard drive is (SSD) – it’s a hard drive without the actual spinning disks inside.

they are the new generation hard drives and still pretty pricey, that work on flash memory principle. and don’t have any moving parts in them (except of electric impulses that are pretty much invisible from the outside.

Main benefits of Solid State Hard drives are these:

1. They are quiet, no noise whatsoever.

2. they are much faster – writing speed is unbelievably faster than regular hard drives even compared to 10k rpm hard drives

3. nothing to brake inside, there are no moving parts.

and there are more differences you can find them here: solid state hard drives on wikipedia

intel solid state hard drive 120gbSo we went ahead and upgraded the gateway desktop with a 120GB intel solid state hard drive.

I installed windows 7 home premium 64 bit on it. and with all that ram and quad core processor power the machine was booting up in less than 10 seconds. which was nice.

from my own experience I will never go back to regular hard drive if I have a choice and always keep my operating system on a SSD. it makes huge difference even if your computer is slower.

The only downside for these so far is the price. they are still pretty costly compared to standard hard drives that are dirt cheap nowadays for the amount of memory you get. this 120GB Intel SSD was $248 dollars with tax at fry’s electronics. for the same price you can probably buy at least 4 TB of regular hard drive space if not more!

Either way if you have an ability, give it a shot you will not regret it! SSD’s rule period.

l355 dc jack This was a sort of simple job replacing dc jack on L355 Toshiba satellite laptop.

it has 1GB of RAM, AMD processor, 320GB of HDD space.

Obvious problem was due to a strong pull of plugged it power adapter cable, which forced dc jack to rip out of its bracket and dangle inside the computer.

New dc jack replacement arrived in 3 days. We opened up this laptop the same day when we received the part, replaced dc jack and put case back together.

Upon opening however it was clearly visible the dc jack was damaged. one plastic corner on the jack was split. And also the bracket where it sits on the side of the bottom case was also a bit broken. But luckily new DC jack fit in there tightly without any movement.

if same kind of pull would happen again, we will have to replace the whole bottom case for it. because the bracket inside will be completely shot.

Best advice is to always be careful not to trip over the power adapter cord or pull it accidentally or drop laptop on the plug or similar. this occurs quite often so be aware of it!

blue screen of death issue

overheating cpu bsod

This gateway computer was brought to us because it was giving its owner a BSOD – Blue Screen of Death. at first our conversation sounded like this:

-Has blue screen been appearing often? answer was yes.

-What operating system are you running? Windows 7 upgraded from windows vista.

-Have you installed any new hardware or new software recently? No.

- Have you done this or have you done that? Answer was yes.

So next best thing I recommended to try and reinstall with a fresh copy of Windows 7 and not the upgrade. The person did so. and called me next day saying it was still giving him blue screen of death (bsod).

Needless to say – the computer repair expert was needed immediately!

As soon as computer was brought, we opened a case and saw that there was a lot of dust on the heat sink. talk about that much dust, where almost all the holes on top of it are covered. We didn’t even turn it on, but I can imagine the cpu fan had to spin pretty crazily. And it did (we later confirmed with the client). So we cleaned it out right away and started the pc.

Our first thought was that blue screen would appear because of over cpu overheating. However that simply defies all the rules and principles. because Blue screen of death (BSOD) only appears “because of incompatible drivers” “or incompatible hardware” – or so you would hear from any of the so-called-computer-experts anywhere.

Long story short. Next thing we did, since the fan was already cooling things down properly. We disconnected the cpu fan and well enough we got to witness blue screen of death for ourselves after we left computer on for about 20 minutes.

Further investigation was needed.

Upon reboot, we went into BIOS settings to check how the CPU temperature was rising and falling. After going through some settings for couple of minutes. my eye caught one interesting thing. there were two settings controlling cpu safety due to overheating:

1. shut down computer once processor (CPU) temperature reaches X.

2. Warn user once CPU temperature reaches Y.

and to my big surprise they were both OFF.

So here came the answer: CPU was overheating due to clogged up with dust cpu heatsink. Cpu would naturally overheat, sometimes in 20 minutes, sometimes in 30 minutes depending on usage and it wouldn’t know what to do afterwards. So system simply came up with blue screen of death.

I imagine hair raising up on someones back now, who is into CPU chips and micro technology. it is suffice to say that its not good at all for CPU to overheat like that to the MAX without being properly shut down at certain temperature.

But luckily it still works and functions without any trouble. Client is happy. Computer works great! Problem solved!

Dell 580s, Core i3 540 processor socket 1156, 4GB of ram, windows 7 home premium, 320GB HDD.

This computer acted very very strangely. No keyboard was working on it to access the BIOS setup or hit any key during the bootup process. When started however computer would freeze and not do anything.

This is the second Dell for me within a month that needed motherboard swap. I don’t know what it is, but newer Dell desktops are getting these strange motherboard issues all of the sudden.dell 580s motherboard

I picked up a nice MSI motherboard for it with 4 DDR3 RAM slots, installed it and computer started up nicely. Windows 7 Home premium was reinstalled without any trouble, data was transferred successfully.

Also, one of my previous posts in blog about other Dell computer we repaired, I mentioned about the front panel connector issue with Non-Dell motherboards. The reason being – Dell wants you to use their own motheboards with their computer cases. so the front panel on/off switch for the motherboard has a connector with 9 female pins (usually) and their layout doesn’t match the panel connector on the motherboard. So the way I resolved it. I plugged it in, sideways. to match the power on/off switch pins on the motherboard. it works :)

On third party cases, connectors on the front panel are usually loose. i.e. they all are separate different color wires with a separate connector for each. Instead of one connector with 6-9 wires.

Either way, repair was a success! Computer works like a charm! The only upgrade it might need is a after market CPU sink, because original is a bit to small and it makes fan go super fast and crazy. If it was my computer it would definitely drive me crazy.

HP-G60 screen replacement case:

technical specs 2gb of RAM, Broken Ltn160at02 16 inch, 320GB hard drive, microsoft windows Vista Home Edition.

ltn160at02

Broken LTN160at02 screen

Be careful not to break this scren because Ltn160at02 have actually been discontinued from production and are pretty much no where to be found, not even in china (learned it the hard way). and some companies actually advertise them as LTN160at02, but send you different screen instead.

The reason they have been discontinued is really unknown to me. I tried to find it, but no one knows why that is.

Either way, the story goes like this. Customer dropped this hp-g60 laptop of, we ordered the screen and the new screen that arrived had completely different connector.

It was not regular type which connects into inverter and then to the screen itself.

The new type has a special ribbon cable attached to it and connects directly to the computer with no inverter. As I connected the new screen, it was working, however it was way too dim as if there was no inverter connected. Screen supplier claimed this was the right screen however not the right model.

So after going back with the screen supplier for about 2 weeks they have actually found correct screen and send it to me.

Now it is assembled back to normal and working perfectly!

This Sony Vaio all in one pc computer is kinda neat.  It reminds me of Imac if anything. It has a core duo processor, 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive and is running windows vista operating system.

sony vaio all in one pc

sony vaio all in one pc

It was booting up ok, everything seemed to be fine at first, however after starting computer would be very very slow – a very common problem many computers have.

There are couple of things here:

1. I always ask how old is your operating system. See windows is such a beast that likes to be taken care of regularly. its like your bathroom. if you don’t take care of it and clean it up every now and then, it can get pretty ugly :-) but lets not go there for a moment, lets focus on Microsoft Windows :-)

So windows if not taken care of properly, will get clogged up, overloaded, over crowded and work very slowly giving you constant problems along the way. Therefore given the fact that many people dont’ know how or simply don’t keep their windows cleaned up gives me quite an indication of why it could be slow.

If a person says, last time windows was installed fresh is 2 years and its slow. I pretty much know why that is. its simple.

2. is related to number 1. and is the fact that different software programs you install on your pc. They also install what I call “little boogers” – software update programs that start every time your computer boots up, when you turn it on. they are usually visible in the right hand bottom corner of the screen next to the clock. Thus, if you have many of the little icons there everytime your pc is on. It means many of those little programs are running in the background, draining your RAM memory. so next thing is to go and turn them off.  you can do it either through regedit, or msconfig commands in windows. how to do that I will explain next time in a separate post.

to end: windows on this computer was reinstalled and pc was working flawlessly. Customer was very happy as usual! great job overnightpcrepair!
